Scripture of the Day - February 26, 2012

Ephesians 4:19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

When we look at the antics of people in this world we can see that there are many who are 'past feeling', that is they are callous, their conscience is seared and they have given themselves over, that is they have committed themselves to, unbridled lust, excess, insolence, lacking moral restraint. They excuse all of these 'qualities' as being free. I am free to do this and do that.

But are they? No! They are deceived... not free. The ability to make decisions based on what is right over what feels good at the moment is true freedom

Let me give you an example to put this in perspective. A person who is grossly overweight feels bad about themselves, their self-esteem is low and they can feel ashamed for being so large. They decided to cut out fattening foods to try and shed some of the weight. Many of us are emotional eaters. We eat to make ourselves feel better. The overweight person sees a chocolate cake, know they shouldn't eat it but they feel so bad and they want comfort so they give into this feeling and eat the cake. They give in to their feeling at the moment. What happens after shows why we are not free when we give into our feelings and do what is easy at the moment. Oh yes they are comforted while they are eating the cake but they have added unnecessary calories, they have broken their promise to not eat fattening foods, they now feel guilty for eating the cake and feel worse than before. And the downward spiral continues.

Is this freedom? Is giving into your desire for pleasure freedom? NO! It's the same phenomenon with the alcoholic, the smoker, the shopaholic, the sexually permissive, and the list goes on. People who give in are not free, they are bound. The ones who are free are the ones who have discipline in their lives and can say no.
